Reflective Service at Torrance Parish Church
Christmas can be tough.
Though there is much to enjoy, celebrate and eat; there are often moments that bring out a blue feeling. Remembering a loved one, reflecting on challenges, looking back on tough milestones… the list could go on.
Each year we carve out a bit of time in the midst of the busyness of Christmas to have some space to reflect and be still. It has been valued by church members and guests alike.
This year we reflected on the following verse from the Bible:
“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.”
John 1:9
As a metaphor, message and gift members of our congregation brought old candles, that envelope a breadth of stories, and they were carefully made into new candles; a way of being reminded of the Light of Christ against the backdrop of all that we walk with.
A poem was penned by our Minister, Stuart, for the occasion:
New Candles from Old Stories.
This candle reminds me of a new beginning and start;
It gives a warming nod to all that is close to my heart.
Formed together with moments that were high and were low;
Here in my hand is something new that I can show.
And so, I meditate on all that shapes my story;
I bring it into the presence of the One who brings light to you and me.
Might this candle remind me of the enduring True Light;
May I know the victory over the darkness of the night.
